Best general choice

BART

SFO’s BART station is at the International Terminal on the Departures/Ticketing level near the G side. From other terminals, take the free AirTrain to Garage G/BART. Fare gates accept a physical contactless bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Clipper. Every rider age five or older needs a separate card or device.

Choose this when: your destination is near a BART station, you are arriving during operating hours, and you can handle your bags on the train and final walk or transfer.

Surface transit

SamTrans

Route 292 stops directly at the airport terminals and runs daily from early morning until late night. SFO also lists limited late-night ECR Owl and 397 service. A bus can fit a specific address or late arrival, but it is not automatically faster or simpler than BART.

Choose this when: the live planner shows a practical stop for your address, or BART is not operating.

Best with bags or a group

Taxi or rideshare

Taxis depart from designated center islands on the Arrivals level. Lyft, Uber and YRide domestic pickups use Level 5 of the Domestic Garage. International pickups use zones 14–17 on the Departures/Ticketing level center island. Follow the app and current airport signs.

Choose this when: you need door-to-door travel, have mobility or luggage constraints, or the shared cost works for your group.

Public transit

Step-by-step

Identify your neighborhood and nearest practical BART station. “San Francisco” covers many neighborhoods; the geographically nearest station is not always the easiest with luggage.
Follow airport signs to BART. From terminals without direct station access, use the free AirTrain to Garage G/BART.
Check the live BART trip planner. Confirm service, any transfer, the correct platform and your destination station before tapping in.
Tap a supported contactless payment method or Clipper. Keep the same card or device available for the complete trip.
Plan the final connection. Decide whether to walk, use Muni, or take a short taxi/rideshare from your city station.

Make the route work door to door

Choose the city station by neighborhood

For many visitors, Embarcadero, Montgomery Street, Powell Street and Civic Center are the central San Francisco stations they compare. The best one depends on the hotel entrance, hills, luggage and any onward Muni connection. A station that looks slightly farther away may provide a simpler, flatter walk or a more convenient transfer.

Do not assume BART serves every visitor district directly. Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina, much of the Presidio and many residential neighborhoods require another connection. Plan that second leg before leaving SFO so you are not deciding on a busy platform with bags.

Navigate SFO without taking the wrong train

The BART station is associated with the International Terminal and Garage G. AirTrain is the airport’s terminal connector; BART is the regional rail service into San Francisco. Follow the signs for Garage G/BART and verify the platform display before boarding. Airport wayfinding and live transit information should override any static screenshot or remembered route.

When paying contactlessly, use the same physical card, phone or watch throughout the journey. A card stored in a phone wallet and the physical version can be recognized as different payment media.

Plan around luggage and arrival time

Keep bags together and away from train doors. If your destination requires a crowded bus, steep walk or multiple changes, compare that friction with a taxi or rideshare for the final leg—or from the airport. A door-to-door option becomes more reasonable when split among several travelers.

For a late flight, check the actual service available after baggage claim. SFO lists limited late-night SamTrans routes, but “late-night service exists” does not mean it serves your address conveniently. Use the live planner, note the exact stop, and keep an authorized vehicle option as backup.

When a direct car is worth it

Transit is usually sensible when

The live service runs comfortably after your expected baggage-claim time.
Your final address is close to the route or an easy final connection.
You can safely manage luggage and any platform or vehicle transfer.
A service alert does not undermine the route.

Choose a direct vehicle when

You arrive after the useful public-transit window.
Your group can share the cost.
Children, mobility equipment or bulky luggage make transfers difficult.
Your destination is far from the route or you need onward flexibility.
